Welcome
Disabled New York is inspired by my travels as a deaf-blind individual through a city that has 9 million inhabitants and an estimated x-amount of people with disabilities but is not particulary disabled friendly.
The subway system is massive yet we still only have a small number of stations are wheelchair accessable. Signage can be confusing, and I don't just mean the direction signs - everyone deals with those - I am referring to the fact that many stations are sometimes only identifiable by a number on a pillar and if you are travelling on one of the older subway cars, god help you if you can understand the announcements.
Other things I'd like to mention are disabled friendly businesses. Bars that are not too dark, have disabled bathrooms (that regular customers do not use - a pet peeve I will come to later), are wheelchair accessable, etc. Stores that have no stairs and wide doorways where the staff are friendly and attentive.
This seems like trivial stuff and I admit that it is! My point is though, there are already plenty of websites out there that tell you how to deal with social workers, disability advocates and disabled rights - sometimes disabled people need to relax too.
